A letter to parents

April 6th, 2009 by · No Comments · Uncategorized

Hello and welcome to the new school term!

This term one of our topic focuses will be on healthy foods. We are going to learn about the healthy foods, what makes foods healthy or unhealthy. We will learn about foods from different countries in particular fruits. Finally we are looking at the amount of sugar in foods and how that can affect our health.

We will be using the internet to research other countries. We will also have a visit from the life education van and they will be having practical activities for the students to participate in. We will also be investigating the amounts of sugar in foods and doing practical activities which will hopefully give the students an idea of how much sugar is actually in the foods we eat. As a closing activity we will be having a healthy lunch and making a fruit salad in the class.

Ways that you can help support your child during this term:

Being available to help out in the classroom for the making of the fruit salad.

Talking about healthy foods and lifestyles with your child.

Encouraging your child to lead a healthy lifestyle and prepare healthy meals for your child, especially a healthy lunch box for school.

Encouraging your child to share information they have learnt about healthy foods with you and others.

Health Reflection

hey bloggers, this is my first refection from the readings and its regarding health promotion in schools.

I like the health promotion approach which was in article 5. Although I do agree with the findings which stated that alcohol and smoking related issues do get priority in schools. I think sun protection is a very important issue, especially in Australia. Australian children need to be educated about staying sun smart.

Three issues I found interesting in the health articles. I have given them a title and then said a few of my thoughts about them.

1) local community- I think involving the local community is important because depending on the students environment may change the importance of the area regarding to health. such as a low economic are school may just focus on the basic healthy eating and hygiene, where as a middle class school may specifically study the importance of dental care.

2) Physical environment- The schools’ classroom and facilities are also very important. I know the facilities such as air conditioning and drinking fountains have improved in schools which is great! but some things such as covered playing area still needs improving. I think having good facilities helps promote good health in the school environment.

3)Educational Outcomes- if a school focus’ on the well being of students I think the educational outcomes can be achieved easier. If children are in a positive environment with all their basic necessities being met, then that provides a platform for a rich learning environment.

I think heath promotion would have a positive impact on my teaching. Its simple, when I feel happy and healthy I am more willing to learn and help others. I would like to promote the positive learning environment so my students can focus on learning while at school. I want my students to not have to worry about other factors while at school, but just to feel safe and happy. I will try and build a safe and supportive environment by making my classroom a friendly place. I would follow the school procedure as a base and from there  I would add my own creative touches, such as star charts and positive reinforcements. My main goal would be to model the healthy lifestyle and positive attitude which would hopefully be reflected and the copied by students.

My school that I am currently at is fantastic in regards to health promotion. The students and staff are like one big family. It has a no hat no play policy for sun protection and sunscreen is readily avaliable in classrooms. There are also shaded areas for students to use. Healthy snacks are available and the students can drink water when they need. The play areas are also year level appropriate so small children are not playing on big equipment and vice verser. My school also has great partnerships with the community. They have excursions for authentic learning experiences and parents are more than welcome. Most parents share the same values and beliefs as the school which really creates a warm environment.

So bloggers thats a few little points of view from me! if you have any comments I’d love to hear them.

Until then bye bye
